Mapping all sorts of things hidden from view below the surface of the sea
An endless ocean and distant horizon holds a magnitude of breathing space. It invites discovery too.
OneGeology aims to increase the global awareness of geology and the availability of digital data around the world. This ethos is closely linked to that of Geodiversity – “the process of recognising and assessing the value of geological features, collections, sites, monuments, artworks, and landscapes and the application of practices for their care, maintenance and management for the long-term benefit of all”.
Satellite Earth Observation (EO) data has long been an important source of information for measuring and monitoring how the environment is changing.
Integration of machine learning is growing, and artificial intelligence is more responsive: EO data is now easier and quicker to use, helping governments monitor climate change more effectively.
ICC 2023 will be held in Cape Town, South Africa in August 2023. The theme for the conference which is “SMART CARTOGRAPHY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT”.
By 2023 we will be immersed in the 4IR with new ways in which to represent geospatial information, and new ways in which humans interact with and use cartography and geospatial information. This has given rise to new cartography and geospatial information science and management.
On-going transformation in navigation, such as e-navigation, autonomous shipping, reduction of emissions, lead to profound evolution of hydrographic services, in a context of high demands for digital data.
Thus the IHO has a goal to increase the use of hydrographic data for the benefit of society. And to participate actively in international initiatives related to the knowledge and
the sustainable use of the Ocean
GEBCO aims to provide the most authoritative publicly available bathymetric data sets for the world’s oceans.
In order to assist and encourage further participation in bathymetric grid development work, GEBCO has created a technical reference manual, the IHO-IOC GEBCO Cook Book, on how to build bathymetric grids.
